In elementary, middle school, high school, and college classrooms, students are bombarded with names like Boyle, Diels Alder, Charles Darwin, Thomas Edison, etc.  The names and the associated portraits usually do not reflect all of the students in the classroom: students that are part of the  Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) or  lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer (LGBTQ+) community. Students rarely, if at all, see scientists or chemists that look like them. I met a Latina chemist when I was 27. Note, this is after 23 years of being in school.

I strive for a day that every child can see a scientist, engineer, mathematician, or computer scientist that looks like them at a young age. It is never to late to show-off BIPOC  and LGBTQ+ scientists from the past and present.
